Those who spoke out or knew what they wanted were considered sassy, disrespectful, bitchy, rude, unmanageable. Any commentary was considered disrespectful and could be considered grounds for punishment. Being quiet was an act of self-preservation. I became more reclusive, preferring to hang out in my room to have cheery conversations with my dolls.

But my emotions gradually became more volatile. I became increasingly more insecure and rebellious. I began acting out. My voice turned inward, and I began having many more conversations within the safe space of my brain where I could both ask and answer my own questions. Shortly after graduation, I joined the military followed by many years in a male dominated culture that also eschewed assertive women who spoke their mind. Once I was in a meeting of high-level executives all men.

There was a tense stand-off as one group of officers lobbied for some need and the others refused to give it to them. I made the HUGE mistake of voicing a proposed solution and all hell broke loose with the lead officer throwing his notepad on the table and stomping out of the room, refusing to come back unless I was evicted from the room.

I was promptly — and publicly —diminished, dismissed, even criticized which found me leaving early in utter humiliation and embarrassment.
